Two kinds of phthalocyanine complexes are dealt with in this thesis; octakis(dialkoxyphenoxy)phthlalocyaninato copper(II) complexes and bis[octakis(dialkoxyphenoxy)phthalocyaninato]lutetium(III) complexes. The results obtained from the present study can be summarized as follows. In Chapter 1, synthesis and mesomorphic properties of novel octakis(dialkoxyphenoxy)phthalocyaninato copper(II) complexes were described. It was found for the first time that the Cu complexes show uniform spontaneous homeotoropic alignment in phthalocyanine-based liquid crystals. Moreover, the simple cubic mesophase, Cub, could be obtained for the first time in phthalocyanine-based liquid crystals. In Chapter 2, synthesis and mesomorphic properties of novel discotic liquid crystalline bis[octakis(dialkoxyphenoxy)phthalocyaninato]lutetium(III) complexes were described. It was found that the Lu complexes also exhibit monodomain spontaneous homeotropic alignment in Coltet. Furthermore, they exhibit two Cub phases, which are the first examples in phthalocyanine-based discotic liquid crystals. In Chapter 3, spectroscopic properties of bis[octakis(dialkoxyphenoxy)phthalocyaninato]lutetium(III) were described. Solvent-polarity-dependent and temperature-dependent electronic absorption spectra revealed for the first time that an intermolecular CT band at 2000-2100 nm is attributable to the molecular aggregation. Furthermore, novel absorotion band at ca. 2400 nm was discovered for the first time in bis(phthalocyaninato)lantanide complexes by temperature-dependent electronic absorption spectra.
